Independence Day

Posted in: Philosophy of freelancing

The Fourth of July: Independence Day.

Among all the fireworks and barbecues as we celebrate the two-hundred-thirty-second anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I’d like to draw your attention to another kind of independence:  Ours.

As well as the US National Independence, we should also take today to celebrate our personal independence as freelancers.

Freelancing is very much in the American tradition.  Think about the independent spirit that settled the West.   Unlike in other countries, Americans went west as individuals and let the government follow after.

That history built a sense of indivuality and self-reliance that can be seen in modern freelancing.  Freelancers are people who live and work by their own rules, not the arcane requirements of the modern workplace.

We can work in bed or at a desk.  We can wear pajamas or a suit.  We can do things our way, not someone else’s.

Celebrate your own right to self-determination by celebrating your independence along with the country’s.
